Jim Webb is a great American. Read his bio sometime. He won the Navy Cross in Vietnam and was one of the most decorated Marines of the Vietnam war. He’s also IMO an excellent author. My two favorite books of his are “A Country Such as This” about Annapolis and “Fields of Fire” about Vietnam.

Fields of Fire is one of the best fictional accounts of Vietnam I’ve read and incidentally is the book that George Allan attacked him for in that 2006 race. Why? Because the main protagonist was a bad guy and did bad things. I was upset with Allan for taking this typically Democrat attack on Webb.

If the Dems were smart, they would elect Jim Webb to the DNC post, but they are not smart therefore Webb will probably stay out of politics. He had a little too much controversy as Sec of Navy during Reagan’s tenure so I’m not sure if he would be a good choice to be in Trumps cabinet. His main problem is he still thinks of the Democratic party as it was when he grew up. Mr. Webb, there are no more Jack Kennedy’s, Scoop Jacksons or Hubert Humphreys in the party...

Webb is a type of Democrat who doesn't exist any more: the patriotic liberal who is proud of his country and his heritage, as opposed to the subversive radical who hates his country and is supposed to spit upon his heritage (if he's white).

Whatever their flaws, old-school liberals like Truman, JFK, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, etc. were a completely different creature from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

I enjoyed his take on the Scots-Irish in America Born Fighting and hope to get around to reading Fields of Fire after hearing good things about it. The attacks the book by Allen for having "pornographic" scenes depicting a child rape seem ridiculous, as if depicting something in a work of fiction is equivalent to approving of it or promoting it. By this logic, any novel depicting a murder must be promoting murder.
