Recovering the older sense of “liberal” is going to be a very important thing. Trump seems to be comfortably within that older sense. The things that our modern left are calling intolerance, is the exclusion of oppressive elements, elements that end up being illiberal, not (in the old sense) liberal.
Dinesh D’Souza nailed it long ago when he wrote his book “Illiberal Education.”
Illiberalism has now come around to bite illiberals on the ass.
“Recovering the older sense of liberal is going to be a very important thing.”
IMHO, the essential disconnect of liberals and conservatives alike is Nationalism.
Americans want politicians and institutions that will put Americans and America first. That will put our interests above all others, every time.
While both parties are essentially anti-American, only the Democrats are overtly so. That’s why it was derisively laughable when they tried to play the Russia card against Trump, and also why the backlash against the left, media, academia et al is so broadly acceptable now.
