Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump -- who said he has a concealed carry permit -- called for the expansion of gun rights Friday, including making those permits applicable nationwide. In a position paper published on his website Friday afternoon, Trump called for the elimination of gun and magazine bans, labeling them a "total failure."
"Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own," Trump wrote.
It's not a departure from what he's said on the trail this year, though it does mark a shift from a position he took in his 2000 book "The America We Deserve," where Trump stated that he generally opposes gun control but that he supported a ban on assault weapons and a longer waiting period to get a gun.
"Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like 'assault weapons', 'military-style weapons' and 'high capacity magazines' to confuse people," Trump wrote Friday. "What theyre really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans."

Boom. Game over.”
Just. Awesome.
I am sooooo glad he’s president-elect !!
Thank you for the clarification. Just saw it
Brad: disregard my comment. Thanks.
Be careful. There are several ways Congress can intervene here, and some of them are bad - in fact, most of them are bad.
1) They could pass a law that every state must recognize every other state's permits. This is probably unconstitutional, since most permits are issued under a state's police power, and there is no general Federal police power.
2) They could create a Federal CCW permit, good in all 50 states and DC. Lawmaking being what it is, this would be as hard to get as the hardest local permits, like NYC or DC.
3) They could make Federal funding for police departments contingent on reciprocity with the 49 other states. This would be the fastest, simplest, and likely most effective method, although I hate this kind of Big Daddy coercion in general.
What they should do immediately is pass DC reciprocity. I was caught up in a flash mob at the National Zoo in 2011, with seven small children, and a guy was stabbed 20 feet away. I wrote immediately upon returning home to FORMER Senator Kelly Ayotte (yay!) asking for DC reciprocity, she wrote back some stupid letter about her budget strategy.
I’m really glad that for at least two states in every direction from where I live, there is concealed carry reciprocity. And thus all the states I drive to regularly.

Felons? Courtrooms? Brandishing?
I mean, I support a very broad 50 state right, but "any state restriction?"
Thank you for posting!
+1
Good points; I should have been more specific. Courtroom restrictions are different, and I am okay with banning firearms in specific government buildings where justified. Felons should have all their rights (including guns and voting) restored once they are no longer in prison, on probation, or on parole. Using firearms in a threatening manner should be illegal.
What I meant mainly was there should be no restrictions on the ownership or general carry of firearms that are legal anywhere in the country, on silencers, on magazine size, or on ammo. I’m okay with adding 10-20 years to prison sentences when using firearms in another crime, but not with making firearms by themselves a crime.
My man!
HITLER-Y wants to confiscate our guns; just like HITLER
did in Germany. We all know how that turned out. .
American boys & Allies had grown up hunting game out of
necessity and were better shots than the Germans.
Democrats (NAZIS) want to disarm their young men; then they
want to start wars all over the world. . then when the wars
get hot, they want to drop those hot potatoes in the laps
of the “opposing party” and BLAME the other party for not
fixing it all right away.
I’m going to Chicago next month. My concealed permit does not allow me to bring my weapon with me. Chicago, the one place you need it.
If concealed carry is a right...there should be no permit. God handing out permits?
We already have a right to carry
And it is supposed to be protected by the 2nd amendment
This is awesome news for those of us who want to be able to defend ourselves. I am sick of reading about the crimes perpetuated especially against women, who are defenseless against the thugs who rape and kill. It’s about time!
My home permit is NH. ME and VT do not require permits (Advanced placement CCW Politics class question: "Name one thing these three states have in common").
A lot of FAIRLY liberal CCW states do not recognize the NH permit because you just get 3 references, pay $10, and get it - no fingerprints, no class, no range test, no written test, etc. For this reason, I also have FL and VA, which give me 34 states, and I have MA because it's next door and I go there a lot. MA, needless to say, recognizes no other permits and no other states recognize it.
The problem Congress needs to solve is the Blue Wall of CT, NY, NYC, NJ, and MD. I go up and down I 95 a lot, and I have family in and around NYC.
Congress also needs to pass DC reciprocity immediately, which is the one thing they have unquestionable authority to do.
Their laws pertaining to nonresidents, especially NYC and Nassau County, are so restrictive as to offend the Constitution.
In a lawsuit against national reciprocity, I think they would win.
This is why I favor withholding Federal funding for police departments and State law enforcement activities for states and localities which do not have shall issue for residents of the other 49 states. If the locals want to oppress themselves, that's their business.
