Oh my...I just MENTIONED Leonard Cohen in the Jerusalem thread the other day.
I used to sing his songs back in the sixties when I was first learning guitar (Susanne, Bird on a Wire, etc), and more recently taught a number of my students “Hallelujah”.
When kids would ask me the meaning of the song, I would explain that it was about King David’s struggle with sin, forgiveness, and redemption. At least, that is what the song said to me. Leonard could be very “mystical”.
