Current Maryland Senator Ben Cardin will be 75 years old in 2018.
I can see the DNC going to him and telling him to step aside and allow Obama to take his seat.
And then assuming Obama wins, he will be the Minority/Majority Leader depending on what happens in the 2018 Senate election.
Obama’s house is in Georgetown. He would have to move to Maryland.
Even he ain’t that crazy.
Obama is only renting in DC so he could move to MD to run.

I thought the ex-gov O’Malley, who briefly ran for President this time, might run for the Senate.
Obama will not want to be a Senator. He hated it even when he was one, he certainly doesn’t desire it after being POTUS.
