Democrats controlled the Senate from 1/3 to 1/20/2001 with a 50/50 split and Al Gore providing the tie-breaker. Republicans controlled the Senate from 1/20 to 5/24/2001 with a 50/50 split and Dick Cheney providing the tie-breaker. Jim Jeffords switched from Republican to Independent on 5/24/2001 and caucused with the Democrats giving them a 51/49 majority. Republicans held the majority in the House.

After the 2002 election, Republicans gained a slim 51/49 (48 Dems + Jeffords) majority in the Senate, and increased their majority in the House. After the 2004 election, Republicans increased their majority to 55/45 in the Senate (44 Dems + Jeffords) and increased their majority in the House.

And of course, there was the 2006 election where they lost it all.
