During the Cold War, it was the Danes who proposed the Telephone Defense System. If the Soviets wanted to attack Denmark, they could call a phone number and would hear the message, "мы сдаемся" (my sdayemsya--we surrender).

Not so, the Danish home guard was set up post WWII to ensure that if the army surrendered, they would keep fighting, kind of along the Swiss model.

Also while the Danes did save almost all the Jews, it was actually due to a SS guy who sabotaged the rounds up, tipping of the resistance and giving the order that if Jews did not answer to door they were not to break it down.

Most of the Jews were smuggled to Sweden.

When the round up yielded virtually no Jews, (one church full waiting for transport to Sweden) this same SS officer had the brass balls to send a notice saying “Denmark was Jew Free.” to Himmler. When Eichmann complained he said, well he thought it did not matter how they were to be gotten out of the country.

He survived. Gives one pause, as a lot of the ones who claim they would be killed if they did not pan out, at least for a senior SS guy.

As for the 91 year old, well if he was actually guilty of war crimes he should be punished, I do not think there is any statute of limitations on murder. The real issue is how does one establish that beyond a reasonable degree? After 71 years it is kind of hard to build a reliable case.

If he was involved in anti-partisan warfare, well that was just brutal on both sides, the partisans were not exactly boy scouts and the one chap I knew who was involved in that in Belorussia in 44 had no guilt for his actions.
