People blindsided by catastrophic life events may lose all cognitive mediation skills for a period of time after the event.
I have personal experience with three such individuals who spent their adult lives lying and rearranging the truth, only to find themselves spewing their own secrets to the most unlikely recipients in the immediate aftermath of their own personal tragedies.
Once they recover equilibrium, they spin fantastic excuses for their own lapses, become angry with anyone who heard the inadvertent truth and revert to attack mode against the listeners.
These people all had some variety of personality disorder or were codependent with with them.
It isn’t hysteria and they aren’t stupid. They are vulnerable, terrified and shifting blame is their preferred default.
You could call it a short circuit.
