WASHINGTON (AP) -- New evidence appears to show how hackers earlier this year stole more than 50,000 emails of Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, an audacious electronic attack blamed on Russia's government and one that has resulted in embarrassing political disclosures about Democrats in the final weeks before the U.S. presidential election.
The hackers sent John Podesta an official-looking email on Saturday, March 19, that appeared to come from Google. It warned that someone in Ukraine had obtained Podesta's personal Gmail password and tried unsuccessfully to log in, and it directed him to a website where he should "change your password immediately."
Podesta's chief of staff, Sara Latham, forwarded the email to the operations help desk of Clinton's campaign, where staffer Charles Delavan in Brooklyn, New York, wrote back 25 minutes later, "This is a legitimate email. John needs to change his password immediately."
But the email was not authentic.

When the “IRS Agent” told him he could settle his tax problem for $5,000, Podesta said, “whew, is that all?”
After all the unfounded accusations about Russians being behind this, accusations that have seriously strained US-Russia relations, and it’s not the Russians after all. The Dems and MSM are dangerous and reckless!!!
Spear phishing.
Best we've got.
Whaling? No! We are trying to save the whales.
I have no serious reason to believe this report.
Run fast if Podesta tries to collect (saying he needs YOUR money).
So?
The email directs him to use Google, not a link on the original email.
Inform me where going to Google to change his password gets the Phisher his password.
It is possible that he pushed a link on the original email, I suppose...

This is hilarious. They fell for the oldest email spam in the world.
I’ll have a smile on my face for at least two days over this.
What a riot!
yeah she’accuses’russia of hacking in. podesta falls for a phishing scam.
yeah shes got the diplomatic creds alright. /s
Clearly this must be the work of the most sophisticated military intelligence network in the world. Who else could devise a plan of this complexity and sheer brilliance:
1. Ask for user for his password.
2. Wait patiently until the user gives you his password.
3. Log in using the user’s password.
These steps must be executed in precisely the order stated above. Any deviation and the plan fails. Sublime!
Wasn’t it 4chan who got Podesta’s password out of a Wikileaks email, then got into Podesta’s iPhone, iPad and twitter? 4chan said at the time that he got all of Podesta’s emails out of the Apple devices. It was a big thread on sub/reddit a few weeks ago. I have a hard time believing this AP story.
Yes, apparently in the original email the link to google was not actually a link to google, which is what a phishing scam is unless it is against a really big boy, in which case it is whaling.
ROFL!!
Kids would have never fallen for this. They are so aware that anything sent online in any format is being read by someone. They look at Hillary complaining about Russians and laugh. She reminds them of their... Grandmother.
They don't know an Obvious attempt at a Password Snitch. And they can't keep their Servers from being MASSIVELY COMPROMISED.
