I look at her plight as a matter of just deserts, and therefore see no reason to consider her situation “sad”.

Sad in the what she has chosen to do with her life. A lifetime of unwise choices.

The best thing she could do now is get on her knees and ask for God's mercy, while there is still time. Good advice for anyone who hasn't done so yet, though some people make better cases for that than others.
