Like most religions, Mormons are not monolithic. They break down in thirds, much like Catholics or Protestants.
About one-third will blindly follow their leadership.
Another third is reasonably active in their faith but thinks for themselves.
The final third doesn't even bother to attend church for the most part. They are there culturally, but more like the second third than the first.
Just take a look at how many Catholics blindly follow Pope Frank. Or how many Protestants take their voting advice from Rev. Graham or Dr. James Dobson.
Mormons are roughly 60% of Utah's population, maybe 25% of Idaho's and 10% of Wyoming's, Nevada's and Arizona's. Divide those numbers by 1/3rd and you have McMuffin's ceiling.

Amen. Pope Francis is a garden-variety South American Liberation Theology Liberal.
Here in Hawaii about 70% "Catholics" voted for Obama, so I know those 3 wings
of a denomination oh too well.
The Mormons, in my experience, are more close-knit than other denominations,
as evidenced by the nights per week each ward spends at the church for meetings
and activities. The church consumes a large portion of their free time, and so I have
labored under the impression that they vote in lockstep more than other denominations.
We all hope that those who take their faith seriously do indeed vote in lockstep:
against evil, against religious suppression, in favor of life issues, in opposition
to moral rot.
