It's what we call in accounting a "Sunk Cost". They probably figured it was still cheaper to stay home and watch it on TV.

Wrong, they are not reporting the turnstile. The earlier article on 49ers attendance is reporting that the fans are staying home and the place was less than 1/2 full.
