Good post. Good subject for any technically inclined person to be aware of, or persue.
Pretty much limitless power of automation with minimal formal training.

The reason I say this is the future is merely because I remember buying an Apple 2e which was only used to shoot down a lot of starships and record a few pitiful recipes.

Eventually, PC's and Apples became user friendly and, well, here we are...Freeping to our heart's content.

Arduino is the user friendly aspect of the marriage of cheap hardware and your own easily written code.

This is the next stage in the computer/robot evolution.

When the internet of things hits the world, your local plumber and mechanic (perhaps even you) will be installing it locally...using something like Arduino.

We can create and install our own home security systems, create our own robot to mow our lawns and clean our houses.

Perhaps this technology IS the future.

But remember that at least one major league pitcher is unable to change the batteries in his off-the-shelf drone without slicing the side of his finger off.

Ping.

Completely unrelated to Trump or the Election.

But this stuff is important.

Wade into it slowly and it will begin to make sense.

And keep going.

In earlier times circuits did not accomplish much. A resister capacitor circuit, a 555 timer, NAND NOR logic chips, analog oscillator. I got ripped off compared to Arduino today.

Arduino software is a simple loop, but effective.

If you have any programming knowledge in virtually any language you can put it to use to control the arduino using the Firmata Library.

This makes it even easier to work with arduinos.

Keep at it they are great fun very practical and very cheap. I've got a half dozen of these controlling the various cnc/robots I've built.

The software end of Arduino projects is what lets your mind create. C is the programming language for the Arduino and I've had luck with Beginning C for Arduino by Purdum. Make sure you get the 2nd edition as I think it's a better book, but you can read reviews on both at Amazon.

Arduino loop is equivalent to the old main(){}
main(param){ loop() }

Common loops are:

do { something } while ( conditions )
while ( conditions ) do { something }

example:

while (sun is down) do { porch light on }

And I want to know how to do this.....why?

And what good is this info, for people like me, who are tech challenged?

Fun stuff! A lot of kids (and old kids) love these.

Also look into Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, and others, and peripheral boards for them. All three were featured in at least one book published, get ready, in the olden-days, January 2015, almost two years ago!

Been writing code on them, and other small computer boards like them, for years. Thanks for bringing them to the attention of the general readers here on FR.
