Is it a sign of a efficiently-operating engine for a ship to give off that much smoke?
Good question...not unless the ship is blowing stacks...an operation where forced air is channeled through the stacks to clean the accumulation of solids from exhaust gasses.
The deck apes 'love' this...at least on US ships...as it is a royal pain to clean decks after this little exercise.
