Teachers are expected to remain politically neutral. These Teachers of the Year say they can’t.

Teachers are often expected to remain politically neutral in class, not letting their students know which candidate they support or where they stand on controversial issues.

Part of the thinking behind this position is that students could be insulted or intimidated from expressing contrary thoughts. Some parents fear that teachers could “indoctrinate” students by expressing their own views in class. As a result, many teachers are hesitant to — and often are expected not to — reveal political views.

In the unprecedented 2016 presidential election, some teachers are casting aside their neutrality to speak their mind. They say the stakes are too high in this election to stay quiet.

They include 10 former state and national Teachers of the Year, who have written an open letter explaining why they are taking sides — in public — in this race. Here’s the letter, and you can see who signed it at the end:

The column continues with their letter, which is filled with all of the standard lies and distortions that we expect from the Left. This is what is being taught to our kids by people who are being paid with our tax dollars. Most parents are totally unaware of what their kids are being taught in their public schools. Many parents think that school is relatively harmless and just like when they went to school. They don't realize how radicalized it has become. Our kids are being brainwashed and we are paying for it.

If your child is in a public school, I guarantee you their teachers are not politically neutral, and I guarantee that when they are not no one will punish or even call them on it.... Period.

The N.E.A. is a Marxist-socialist, anti-Christian, anti-male, queer-loving, Democrat-funding, anti-American group of hard left, Frankfurt Schooled progressives. And pubic school teachers dare not oppose them.

I hold pubic school teachers personally accountable for America’s weak, immoral, ignorant and spiteful condition.

Why do 98% of teacher union dues go to the Democratic Party? I would say that a bias is evident.

Well can you blame them?? their precious jobs are on the line seeing the Donald is going to dismember Carter’s DOE and thus crush the filthy Unions that have protected these worthless “shadow civil employees” which are mostly thinly veiled Marxist America Haters.

They can all retire or resign when things get tough and our local school districts can replace their sorry carcasses with good teacher that love America.

Brainwashing - er indoctrinating kids with liberal propaganda.

School teachers are another arm of the Democratic Party.

Not news.

When I was in grade school (65-71) the teachers were mostly decent hard-working local citizens and patriotic Americans, they did not bring home a large wage but they loved their jobs and they cared about the children.

The counterparts of todays “teachers” back then were sitting on their fat asses watching soap operas and doing lewd things with milkmen and plumbers while their husbands were away at work. Today we call them emancipated women...

The Dept of Education, the nea, the local administrators and peers all bring pressure on the individual to "toe the party line".

There is no alternative to their dictates. It is all pure indoctrination starting at the earliest pre-school years through college.

I know, I am a retired school teacher. The only department with any conservative values in my school was our vocational technology department. All of the people there led real lives before they became teachers.

That’s not necessarily true. My brother teaches in a public school and the teachers do not discuss where they stand politically with their students. I asked him if that was mandated by the school board and he said that was a decision made by the teachers themselves. He said the teachers don’t even discuss it among themselves.

They have become habituated to spewing propaganda. They forgot how to remain ‘neutral’

If true, that is an outlier.. even if most teachers in a school are willing to be professionals, anymore there it is rare a school does not have more than 1 activist teacher who will flagrantly push their beliefs upon their students... and when they do, they are not called to account for it.

Unionized teachers are amongst the most active, hardened, and bloodthirsty political operatives in the country IMHO.

I teach. In a public school. Politics are not discussed in my class. If the kids bring it up I simply say, “That has nothing to do with what we are learning today.” I’m not the only one, but that doesn’t fit into the “All teachers be da debbil” meme.

Taught for over 30 years. Most of that was Jr High Social Studies. Of course politics were discussed in class. I made it a point of personal pride to never reveal my own politics. First, the district and taxpayers weren’t paying me to brainwash their kids. Second, I didn’t want my kids to feel afraid to express their own opinions or feel they had to suck up to me by parroting mine.

Great moment was when two kids had a passionate political argument in class—one very conservative and one very liberal. Later both separately came up and told me that they just “knew” I supported them.

My job was to teach them how to think and express themselves, not what to think. This country isn’t the Soviet Union, yet.

In NYS back in 2000, the teachers in our HS were running around the place with Hillary pins. When Lazio came to visit they shunned him. When I was in JHS back in the 50’s most my teachers were political, and in HS they also had their political comments.

I am a public school educator and I’m certainly not politically neutral.

You’re welcome, FReepers.

I worked as a long term substitute in a public school, and coincidentally another FReeper just happened to work at the same school.

I consider her a careerist commie.
