Or they were "flippers" who basically arbitraged real estate, using an unrealistic demand and an inflated price. It was paper chasing paper, until the paper trail got too long and the whole thing collapsed. Then the too-clever-by-half arbitrageur got stuck with property he bought at the inflated level, and that he now couldn't give away.

And the banks? Goldman-Sachs, Bear-Stearns, Morgan-Stanley ... they all got burned bigly. Until they got bailed out with taxpayer money.
