Different time, different electorate. People keep wishing for a repeat of 1980. I don’t see it. I’m thinking much more like 2000/2004.
I think the repeat of 1980 is all the polls showing Trump down (well, of course not all but that’s the way the media is spinning it) and then Trump winning...extremely unlikely Trump wins by 10 pts like in 1980.
I think it was Charles Krauthammer who recently said that "Republicans keep telling me that all Trump needs to do is get back the Reagan Democrats. We'll no matter how hard he tries, Trump is not going to get them back. Why? Because they are laying in cemeteries across the Midwest and South."
He makes a good point, if you were a middle aged (45 year old) blue collar democrat in 1980, you would be 81 now. Most people don't realize that it's been 36 years since Reagan won in 1980. We are in a totally different era with a different population, an 18 year old kid that was barely old enough to vote for Reagan in 1980 is pushing 60 now!
