It will be a hybrid with some states withdrawing orderly and some states devolving into chaos. If a states secedes by a majority vote referendum then what would the people in that state be fighting? ...each other.
States are the last line of defense against an out of control Federal Govt. They can convert seamlessly and easily into sovereign countries by design.
I disagree. The sovereignty of individual states is little more than a claptrap for state politicians. Even IF there is a referendum, no state government will set itself up to be in direct confrontation with DC.

If FedGov fails you will still have a governor, state police and all the machinations of local government. Really the average citizen has zero interactions with FedGov.
Thank God some of us getit. If DC collapses(the checks stop coming) just how does a state like Alabama devolve into violent chaos?
