According to a local news source, the father ran across the street for help and told a neighbor his son had a gun and wanted to kill cops. The neighbor then called the police.

That’s an outright premeditated ambush, just like Dallas, just like Baton Rouge.
These heartbreaking situations cry out for a technical improvement, and it’s not far off.
Humanoid robot avatars, armed or not, sent into harm’s way first. Under control of police officers at all times, not autonomous, no need to freak.
AI is coming too, and it’s a real issue, but a separate issue from robotics. So many people seem inclined to conflate the two.
