All he has to do is smile, turn to her, say that he and Bill had similar conversations out on the golf course, and take full responsibility for saying what he said.
Problem solved.
Moreover, if similar tapes exist, they’ll be completely neutralized.
A terse, two sentence reply would more than likely drive her crazy. And we need the public to see her in crazy mode.
I know this tape looks bad to us on FR, but I can assure you it’s far from a game-changer.
I really hope Trump doesn’t take the bait if the moderators or Hillary press him on this at the debate. He should respond by very briefly addressing the accusations (in whichever very concise way he and especially his advisors think best) and then rapidly switch to talking about his hiring the first woman to manage a skyscraper construction project in NYC, having more female executives than male, paying women execs more than men (in stark contrast to the Clinton Foundation), etc.
It’s going to be really hard for him, but he needs to make sure he doesn’t drop down into fighting over the details of each accusation against him like this. If she lies about his policy positions, then he does need to fight her on it with some details, but he needs to be on the offense and not permit stories like this to dominate the debate.
Trump said that he’s not going to talk about Billy Boy’s indiscretions, but if she or the moderators insist on turning Trump’s past with women into the “most important issue in the country,” then I think Trump may need to unload the big guns against the Clintons—so long as he makes explicitly clear what Hillary’s role was in attacking the women her husband assaulted. He’ll just make her look like a victim if he doesn’t handle it right, but it could show her up as a big hypocrite if he can keep his cool and serve his revenge cold. If she’s really pushing him on this sort of thing, that would also open up a legitimate opportunity for him to hit her on getting off a child rapist and laughing about it back when she was a lawyer.
