You are quite correct that typically an effort fails before the reform comes. In our present circumstances though, I would say that Bush 2 was the failed change agent to turn back the Clinton decline. We were snookered. The 2010 elections were another example, with all those ‘Tea Party’ congress-beasts who faded as soon as they got in.

Trump loses only through fraud. Assassination is another great hazard, especially since Pence started regurgitating neocon dogma. I think Pence is an honorable individual, but rabid neocons of the ilk of McCain or Kristol would be happy to see Trump removed to install Pence. Media spins are already under way about how much better the ticket would be if reversed.

I think Trump will win, and he will need to watch his back like a Roman Caesar.
