You are being silly. Of course the hurricane caused a lot of damage - as hurricanes that make landfall usually do. However, it was not quite the storm that it was predicted to be. And for that, we can take solace.
See that red pickup truck in the first photo? The storm didn’t put it up on the porch, the owner put it there to keep the engine and cab out of the water. Poorer people around Hatteras improvise like that. The more well off already have raised parking.

As an aside, the difference between capitalism and communism is seen in the homes and clothing and even the weight of the people.
