Idiots! The opera is basically an indictment of slavery. Did they not even trouble to read a synopsis?
Whitewashing indeed - where was the fuss about cultural appropriation when Kathleen Battle played Zerlina in Marriage of Figaro?
I’m catching a breeze from all the knees jerking nowadays.
I for one would be totally against that.
Yikes - correction - she was Zerlina in Don Giovanni - now who’s the idiot? I hang my head in shame.
Oh, good line of thought.
How about the formidable Jessye Norman playing Cassandra in Berlioz’s Les Troyens? She’s remarkable.
(And sort of a non-sequitur...but not really....but I am a HUGE fan of Hamilton, and I think it’s not only acceptable that much of the cast is not lily white...I think it’s a great artistic choice, and it is visually powerful even though they original cast was chosen b/c of their pipes, not their skin color.....incidentally, the Chicago Hamilton cast is all white...except for Aaron Burr who is black! Now if that’s not politically incorrect in an Othello sort of way, I don’t know what is! But the point being: let’s do art. Not politics. Let’s forget all of this cultural appropriation nonsense and enjoy the art. Can we?)
