Woody Allen had some of the most amazing comic material ever made.

A few samples I remember: In his movie about the Russo/French wars he has a guy holding up a little piece of turf in his hand and saying: “That’s my land. That’s my land.”

In an anti-Eisenhower jab he says to a beautiful women in one movie: “I just want to do to you what Eisenhower did to the country.”

and then there is his classic: “I would never want to belong to a club that would accept me as a member.”

Love his stuff—don’t know anything about the latest one.

Loved, “What’s Up, Tiger Lilly”. The original MST3K.

There was some funny material in his books from the 1970s and 1980s. In one story, a character had written a self-help book called something like, “How I Turned One Million in Real Estate into $25.00 in Cash.”

Don't forget "I'm a bigot, but for the left."

It's in Annie Hall. Alvy Singer says it to Allison Portchnik , played by Carol Kane.

Here it is.

Sorry, that was stolen from Groucho Marx.

No. that was Groucho Marx. He used to hang out at the Jewish Country Club (Hillcrest) in Beverly Hills because the others were all “restricted,” blacks and Jews not allowed. He was so famous that at some point one of the restricted clubs offered him a token membership. He wrote back using that famous line.

"Take the Money and Run" was a masterpiece of comedy. The bank robbery scene, but #1 on my hit parade was him playing cello in the marching band... Could have been a Monty Python bit.

“I would never want to belong to a club that would accept me as a member.”

IIRC, Groucho Marx said that first. Along with, “I never forget a face, but in your case I’m willing to make an exception”.

Anyway, Woody Allen’s 1983 “Zelig” was a classic in my opinion. He assembled antique cinematic equipment to make scenes from the 1920’s & 1930’s appear original. The Zelig character was human & his foibles understandable.

When he stayed away from politics & personal morals, Woody Allen could be extremely funny.

Except that he was quoting Groucho Marx, who said that first.
