Ex-Mex diplomat: Trump can get Mexico to pay for wall, deport 4M illegals
Washington Examiner ^ | 9/22/16 | Paul Bedard

Bolstering Donald Trump's pledge to build a wall and deport criminal illegals, a former Mexican foreign secretary said that there are "many ways" the Republican presidential candidate, if elected, can get Mexico to pay for the wall and deport four million immigrants.

"The wall is a perfectly feasible promise to fulfill," said Jorge Castañeda, Mexico's secretary of foreign affairs from 2000 to 2003.

Dismissing a Mexican Senate move to block federal payments to a Trump administration for the wall as "silly," Castañeda offered up several ways for Trump to find the money.

"If he really wants Mexicans to pay for the wall, he has many ways of getting many Mexicans to pay for the wall, increasing the fee for visas...increasing the toll on the bridges..taxing remittances," he said at the Hudson Institute in Washington.

"If Obama was able to deport a little more than two million...why can't Trump deport four million if he wants to?" he added.

Trump figured this out long ago. He’s a businessman he understands how to generate revenue, unlike bathhouse barry who thinks the payroll tax is the only way to generate revenue.

Noting that Obama has been dubbed the "Deporter-in-Chief" for removing two million, Castañeda said doubling that to four million shouldn't be a problem.

This is a mis-characterization of Obama's actions.

Obama's deportation number skyrocketed because his administration started counting people that were caught while, or shortly after they crossed the border.

Prior administrations only counted people that had settled in the US, and subsequently found to be in the US illegally.

But the media tells me the 10+year old 12 million number is all that is here, and in fact most have left due to a bad economy. There’s only a few families here that want to raise their kids in peace and get a slice of the American Dream.

Only four million? That’s the number in Los Angeles County alone.

Here's my proposal:

Offer Mexico $20 billion in exchange for the land 10-20 miles south of the existing U.S.-Mexico border. The cities within this land would need to be evacuated within one year. This land would completely be federal land, so there's no issue with property rights from landowners on the border, with 5 checkpoints, and we can open military bases on it.

A wall simply cannot be built on most the current border, especially along the TX line. Some parts of the border have high cliffs or has the Rio Grande River. Building a wall on our side of the Rio Grande is tacky and will destroy the natural environment of the riverbank.

We need this 10-20 mile buffer zone. This will cut a diagonal swath from the Gulf of California all the way south of Brownsville TX. I understand that cities such as Juarez, Tijuana, and Mexicali would have to be abandoned, but with the $20 billion, these people and businesses can relocate. We would own a piece of Baja California as well.

This buffer zone will eliminate illegal aliens smuggled by coyotes. It will destroy the drug cartels. It will destroy tunnels and drug trafficking at the source. It will improve commerce, trade, and relationships between the two nations.

Many FReepers don't know about the history of the Border Wars from 1910 - 1920. There were a series of raids by Mexican guerrillas on border towns, and efforts by General Pershing and the U.S. Army failed to eradicate the problem.

Our current border is irregular. It is time for a straight-line border, complete with a wall and backed by the U.S. military, that provides a buffer zone between the US and Mexico.

And that comment is not an exaggeration.

The number of "hispanic" schoolchildren in California is now 1.7 million.

The number of "non-hispanic white" schoolchildren (you know, the American kids) is 750,000 or so.

The first time since 1846 that Mexican children outnumber American children in California.

Did that happen because of legal immigration?

Only fools believe that.

I’ve opposed Trump for most of this election cycle (until recently) and even I recognize that this is a promise Trump can easily keep. The only proof you need is how foreign banks reacted to the IRS last year when they fully implemented the Foreign Accounts Transaction Compliance Act (FATCA).

Many speculated that foreign banks would stop doing business with Americans, rather than comply with the reporting demands of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, who really had no jurisdiction to make such demands. It turns out, they were wrong. Nearly all countries and foreign banks have complied with FATCA, because the alternative of losing American business is much more painful.

This is an example of a time when the Obama-led IRS was fully committed to carrying out a mission, which was to reign in American taxpayers who were hiding money in foreign bank accounts. And when they were committed, and everyone else knew it, the rest of the world backed down. The exact same thing would happen if we were committed to building the wall and sending the bill to Mexico. They WOULD pay for it, because they want to continue doing business with us.

“Trump figured this out long ago. He’s a businessman he understands how to generate revenue, unlike bathhouse barry who thinks the payroll tax is the only way to generate revenue.”

You bet. I am not much of a businessman, and even I knew immediately that the mocking naysayers were either ignorant or duplicitous.

Trump could deport 4 million over his first term, just from new arrivals.

Cutting off welfare would send millions packing on their own.

Other policies would cause even more to leave on their own (employment enforcement) or be deported from the interior of the country (like speedier deportation of criminals).

Thank you for an excellent analysis and example.

It is the will to act that matters. The communists like Soetoro have no will to act in the interests of America and its rightful people - only to act for exactly the opposite.

FATCA increases the federal leviathon, not individual prosperity, so of course Soetoro was willing to commit to it.

It’s of no use baling the water out of the boat until you put a “plug” in it first.

I only started voting in 2004, but I can’t think of a more clear contrast between candidates in history. It really comes down to if you love America, you vote Trump. If you hate America, and want it to be more like a third world nation, you vote Hillary. It’s the simple.
