Tulsa County DA: Charges of manslaughter in 1st degree will be filed against Officer Betty Shelby.
“...shot to disable”??? Just exactly how does someone pull that off?
Only thing I can say about this is type of thing is that I know, beyond any reasonable doubt, that I do not have what it takes to do what police do for a living.
It’s a very tough job, and if I was on the job, it would be just a matter of time before I screw something up, so I feel like it’s a smart thing to do to leave this job to better men and women than me.
I’m not sure why she shot this guy, or why she thought or felt that her life was in danger, but she’s going to have to answer to it, and that’s good.
I think if you kill someone, and you cannot demonstrate that you were in immediate danger, then a crime has been committed, this goes for police and civilians.
Gotta follow the law.
“And on our next episode of...Jurassic Cop... :)”
Honestly. That could be the premise of the funniest skit Saturday Night Live has attempted in decades. Funny.
The French do it with rubber bullets
a second officer wouldn’t have fired a tazer if he didn’t also personally perceive an immediate threat, so it’s actually a validating action
You might want to watch this ... especially around the 30 second mark. Looks to me like both front windows and the sunroof are open.
There was a gun on the ground in Charlotte. Were it in the fellow’s pocket it likely would have stayed in his pocket when he fell. It was on the ground. I am guessing it was in his hand. Not a situation with a good prognosis.
They also have no idea how many innocent people will die if they err on the side of caution and don’t deal effectively with someone who is a threat. That is why it is an inherently difficult decision under any circumstances. And it is also why the judicial process should factor in the fact that her primary motivation behind her actions was probably to protect the innocent (including herself). In other words, a very difficult decision, made under very difficult circumstances, with, in all likelihood, a noble and righteous intent.
People who are “limited” need to take extra care in many situations. A deaf person, for example, needs to be extra careful when crossing the street. They need to be extra careful at sporting events. They need to be extra careful when operating machinery. And, they need to be extra careful when interacting with the police.
4 cops and nobody thought to just arrest the guy...a couple of cops from 1956 hearing an account of this would be left scratching their heads. They would not understand a second of it and they wouldn’t know where to start in asking questions about it.
I don't think so. Per Find Law it's minimum 4 years of which 85% must be served, or about 3.5 years IN PRISON.
Hopefully they put her in a nice country club prison. Life could be very bad for a small white former cop in a hardcore woman's Max, most of which are controlled by black gangs.
It’s extremely difficult to fire a pistol in such a precise manner to do what you describe.
Firing a pistol is not like firing a rifle.
Firing a pistol under strenuous circumstances and expecting that you can place a bullet in such a way as to not kill someone tells me that you don’t have much or even any experience with pistols.
She won’t be convicted.
She won’t be convicted.
I don’t think killing someone for disobeying an order is actual police policy.
I’m glad they charged her, completely wrong escalation of force for turning towards his car.
Ed
Good.
The Lone Ranger totally agrees with you.
************
The Lone Ranger had the advantage of having a fancy white hat, a lightning fast draw, and a trusty six shooter. lol
Guns are not there to serve warnings. Guns are not there to wound people in hopes that they slow down. If the person is not an imminent threat then they should not even be threatened with a gun.
Basically one of the larger male cops should have tackled him and they could have gone Rodney King on him -- but they would have had a horrible lawsuit for that too (he was probably high on PCP like King).
I would never want to be a cop, and I know there are a lot of cop haters even here on FR, but it's hard to imagine a half-way decent world that doesn't have them. (Unless you are a 14 year old and believe in things like anarcho-libertarianism, or a 45 year old who hasn't grown up).
Dead is certainly disabled.
Females have never had any reason to be cops, especially on patrol. Never. And here’s a good example. Should have been assigned behind a desk at the very most.
Hey, PC women’s rights morons, here’s exhibit A.
