It occurs to me that you can grant immunity for two reasons. The first, and most obvious, is because you want the truth, and the testimony can help you catch a bigger and guiltier fish.
The more Machavellian second reason, which has only occurred to me recently, is that it's a way to hide the truth if the prosecuting authority wishes to. If you grant immunity, and then don't ask any questions, the information NEVER comes out. It's like the tree falling in the forest where no one is listening.
