Birtherism is a term used by the Left to demonize and shame those who believe that one must satisfy the eligibility requirements under the Constitution to be President. Was Obama a birther when he co-sponsored the Senate resolution on McCain's eligibility? Climate denier is used similarly by the Left to equate those who question man-made global warming to the Holocaust deniers.
Trump used the "birther" issue against Cruz questioning his eligibility and rightfully so. SCOTUS has never offered an opinion on the definition of natural born citizen.
Technically true of course. I should have stated “Obama’s birtherism”, which I don’t believe was ever raised in this campaign.
Minor v. Happersett, 88 U.S. 162 (1874)
The Constitution does not, in words, say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common-law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives, or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners.
Some authorities go further and include as citizens children born within the jurisdiction without reference to the citizenship of the parents. As to this class there have been doubts, but never as to the first.
- Morrison Waite
The case, which regarded women suffrage, was a unanimous decision. Unfortunately, they ruled against the woman.
