Need to render a judgement based on some facts...
(2) Every single Democrat in Congress cast a no confidence vote against alGore. At the time they could have had Gore complete Clinton's term and remain eligible for two full ones on his own. The GOPe may have been terrified about that possibility, but not one Democrat though it would help their side. It was the one time I've agreed with them. Making Gore stand by himself, outside Bill's aura, would have soon revealed to all what a bafoon he was.
(3) The GOP had the power to go over the media's head and tell the true story about Clinton, but panicked (cf. #2) and EVERY GOP Senator then serving voted to punt. The default Senate rules going in for this were those written to nail Andrew Johnson with enhancements Hillary and friends added to get Nixon in the 70s and a few the Rats added to try for Reagan in the 80s. Changing the rules required a majority vote. The GOP held the Senate so could have forced use of the then current Democrats targeting GOP Presidents rules. Instead the Senate went into a still secret session (from which still nary a leak) and therein voted 100-0 (i.e.. including EVERY then GOP senator) to change the rules and hold a sham trial without most of the evidence.
