Newspaper isn't even used for that any more, although it appears that the safety concerns no longer apply now that most papers have switched to non-toxic soy-based ink.

I was stationed in the UK in the early 60’s and the fish and chips was indeed wrapped in newspaper. Great memories of riding the top on the double decker bus back to base, drunk as a skunk and gorging on freshly made chips and a nice piece of Sole all sprinkled with white vinegar, salt and pepper.

Greasy as all get out but really delicious.
