Actually, Mulan was one of my favorite Disney movies. As a parent of young mixed race children it was nice seeing an asian female lead in a family movie. And the movie is as accurate as most Disney adapted movies. Even movies like Cinderella and Snow White are not exact retelling of the Fairy Tales. I am no left wing kook, but i do appreciate diversity in movies. Sadly, most whites do just see yellow skin as close enough in roles.
What struck me about Malkin’s commentary is that it is not just whites doing that. With the actors being suggested for these roles, just being Asian, of any source seems to be good enough in most cases. Mulan is a Chinese story, but how many of the recommended actors in this new version are Chinese? The irony of the demands from this activist group is that they seem to be grouping “people of color” into one “close enough box” as well.
