You sound like you remember, as I do, the 2002 NJ Senate election where Robert Torricelli dropped out because his corruption was caught. It was after the deadline to replace a candidate, but the corrupt NJ Supreme Court allowed former Senator Lautenberg to be placed on ballot, and he won.

I also remember that simultaneously in Hawaii, Representative Patsy Mink died a month before the election, but Democrats demanded she remain on the ballot and she won posthumously.

A special election was then called, instead of disqualifying votes for her and declaring the living candidate (meaning the Republican) the outright winner and avoiding the cost of a second election.

Exactly. I wouldn't put it past them to try this again. The ultimate question is, will lightning strike twice for them? I sincerely hope not.
