If I recall, in order to be listed on the state ballots a candidate must declare in a certain time frame. If I remember right, it was two weeks after the Democratic primary. I have no idea what would happen if the candidate was unable to serve. In other elections, for Senator and Governor states have allowed the surviving spouse to serve. Some states have the governor appoint somebody. Some states have a special election. I have no idea what the federal government would do. logically the VP would become the candidate as his name is on the ballot and he would choose a running mate. But then, logic and laws do not apply to Democrats.
