I have heard more than a few USMC combat veterans say that the harsh environment helped them to survive.
If nothing else the Corps taught discipline and self control under stress, which are invaluable in combat.
As the saying goes - The Marine Corps Builds Men - or, at least it will IF Hitlery and the Looney Left don't get their scummy hands on it.

Watching this disgusting slide towards who knows what end, I have always held out hope for the USMC to be the one arm of the military to resist this BS when all the other services have knuckled under, but I have to accept that this cancer we see will eventually infect the Marines in the same way a cancer starting in a person’s kidney will eventually infect their brain or liver, especially when untreated.

Never mind the deliberate effort we see to cause the spread of the cancer.
