I spent 8 years as a naval officer. I know how the Filipino program worked. They were brought in as stewards, but many were able to migrate to other specialties. We had a special treaty with the Philippines on this program that was ended in 1992.
Filipinos were the only foreign nationals allowed to enlist in the U.S. armed forces without first immigrating to this country. And the Navy was the only military branch they could join.
*** “Filipinos were the only foreign nationals allowed” ***
I have known many of them while in the Navy and after (I was married to a Filipino)
REALLY Good people
My Son served 6 years as an Electrician/Nuc Power-plant Operator and when we go to the Filipino Potluck get togethers ... he is a Rock Star ... it is what can happen in a single Generation.
That was the case back the day. I also worked with a Filipino in the military, but under Obama things have changed:
“New Rules Allow Some Illegal Immigrants to Serve in Military”
“A small number of illegal immigrants will be allowed to join the military under new rules announced Thursday, USA Today reports.
The new rules expand an existing program called Military Accessions in the National Interest (MAVNI.) That program allows the military to recruit foreign nationals with specific skills in high demand, such as language translation or healthcare training....”
