I have hundreds of books in Kindle app and iBooks. Computer programming tech guides to cookbooks, medical to novels and the classics. Matt Bracken’s complete works to the best concordance.

I bluetooth books with readers to the Kenwood in the truck. Nice for long drives. If I recieve a call, the mic is on the visor, the sound comes through the stereo, the caller ID is on the head unit, and the controls are on the steering wheel. iPhone controls. It was built that way.

Defensive much? It's fine if you don't like smartphones, just try not to be obsessive about it. There are idiots who use them, just as there are idiots on FR. Others do fine.

As to me being an "addict", not even close. It's a very useful tool, nothing more.

I'll reply to one of your points, since it was so far off base:

OTOH, not everyone takes pictures of what they are eating, what they are wearing, where they are, etc. and besides which, there are for real cameras for that.
Current smartphone cameras are excellent. Many professional photographers have published work shot on the iPhone. The iPhone 7 Plus camera will be another leap forward, I'm really looking forward to it.

The most important point is, though, that it's a camera you always have with you. In addition to capturing family moments that would have escaped otherwise, and a thousand other things, smartphone cameras have been responsible for catching plenty of criminals, including police officers acting criminally. That is all to the good of society.

Thanks for the laughs...

“GOOD GOD!

When did FReepers all become such cynical, self-satisfied, proud-to-be-ignorant curmudgeons?”

It’s only a few of ‘em, but they were sure attracted to this thread! LOL

As I recall, that same poster made reference to washing machines lasting for “decades!”

Talk about somebody who hasn’t gotten out for awhile.....

You missed a few other uses...

- weather report
- Stock quotes and trading
- reviews on just about any product or services
- directories of just about anything
- Range finder for golf
- shopping
- depositing checks
- how to fix and do just about anything
- taking notes, written or oral
- calculator
- and on and on...

You also completely missed the point of the article and my point. Which is that you can do everything that’s on your list and mine with the current generation phone you have and even with one that’s two or three generations old. That spending your money to upgrade to the latest, especially if you have the current version, is probably a waste of money.

There’s nothing compelling about the iPhone 7 that should make a rational human spend a good chunk of money to upgrade from the 6.

I love and marvel at my smart phone and use it constantly - (too much?), but I also want to spend my money wisely. I’ll buy a new phone when it does useful stuff that my current one can’t.

But of course you’re free to spend yours as you wish.

I'm hardly "defensive" and originally replied to your smarmy post to someone else; trying to make you see that not everyone needs the latest gadget or even one all that advanced.

We are all different and not everyone requires the same amount of "stuff" on their "smart phones" as you do. Why spend that kind of money when there are alarm clocks, T.V.s, radios, cameras, paper and pens, etc. ? And re that post made it quite clear that that person doesn't need nor want all of those bells and whistles.

Being a supercillious, smarmy, pathetic person, you decided to reply to that Freeper in an uncalled for way.

Current smart phone cameras still can't compete with the cameras that professionals used to use and many still do. And WHY would anyone "need" to always have a camera handy? The videos that the BLM types take aren't ever from the beginning of what happened, are often taken in a way that INNOCENT police get crucified for doing their jobs, sending naked pictures and getting teens rap sheets and worse, and/or perverts taking indecent of others, without their consent.

Wanna have a REALLY good laugh?

GO LOOK INTO THE NEAREST MIRROR !

Some older washing machines are far superior to brand new ones; even brand new ones of the same brand.

Yes, obviously, YOU don't get out much at all. ;^)

Project much?

You’re a walking advertisement for why FR could use an “ignore” feature.

By all means, get in the last word while you’re at it. LOL!

You really should think more before you jerk your knee to defend your fragile ego. What you say is the entire point, and has been for more than twenty years. For you to make an assertion that seems oblivious to the status quo means either you ARE oblivious to the status quo, or you are so vain as to be incapable of entertaining the notion that another may be more savvy than yourself.

So which is it?

I've got my own suspicion based on your comment about the camera just above this post. For you to attempt to sound rational comparing a professional grade camera, which has NEVER been the majority of consumer cameras, to a "good enough" device that is one tenth the size and does far more than any camera ever conceived tells me you are too vain to admit the superciliousness of your assertion, and too conceited to believe yourself capable of such vanity.

My reply to another poster, was in response to his claim that "professional photographers" are now using smart phone cameras to make great pictures with. That's just not true; older photos have more character and shadings, that even with photoshopping, just don't make the grade.

Today's washing machines just aren't as good as some older ones.

I am neither vain nor delusional; however, you are, as well as being benighted.
