Fifty-three-year-old Danny Heinrich of Annandale admitted in court Tuesday that he kidnapped, sexually assaulted and killed Jacob Wetterling on Oct. 22, 1989.
The admission is finally bringing answers to what happened to the 11-year-old boy almost 27 years ago, whose remains were found in Stearns County last week after Heinrich led investigators to the site.
“Danny Heinrich is no longer a person of interest,” U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Andrew Luger said after the court hearing. “He is the confessed murderer of Jacob Wetterling, and nearly 27 years after he committed this heinous crime, he has been brought to justice. And Jacob is finally home.”
Heinrich was in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on Tuesday in front of Judge John Tunheim because he had been charged with 25 counts of child pornography in a separate case from Jacob’s abduction.

The sick pig just wants attention now. He is most likely a serial predator and I have no doubt he is lying about the facts of the case.

“Heinrich said his shovel wasn’t big enough, but he remembered there was a construction company nearby, so he went to see if a shovel was there. Heinrich said he found a Bobcat and knew where the company kept the key, so he returned to the site and dug a hole using the Bobcat, which is where he buried Jacob.
Heinrich said Jacob was buried in a reflective vest, red jacket and blue sweatpants.
About a year later, Heinrich said he drove by the site where Jacob was buried and noticed that the grave was partially uncovered and that he could see Jacob’s red jacket above the ground. Heinrich said he “gathered as much as he could” of the clothing and remains and walked across the highway to a farm, where he dug a 2-foot-deep hole in the ground and reburied the remains covered by the red jacket.”
He just happened to be on a dead end road and just happened to have handcuffs with him. And just happened to know where the bobcat keys were and no one noticed him digging a hole.
No telling how many others he’s molested and killed.

That stunned me, too. It’s not like they weren’t looking for him 24/7. For a long, long time.
This story has obsessed my county since it happened in 1989. We all thought that once the deer hunting season opened in early November, Jacob would be found, but it never happened, and eventually the trail went cold. Here in central Minnesota, our hearts are broken along with those of Patty and Jerry and their three surviving children.
I remember that this event opened our eyes to the numerous sexual assaults of young boys in Paynesville over the previous 1-2 years, which had not been open knowledge. Often law enforcement does not publicize things like that so as not to make people ‘overreact in fear’. In retrospect, we can see that such a tactic is harmful to the safety of everyone.
We are all so emotional over the events of the past 5 days. I am hoping that MN can change its statute of imitations on serious crime when DNA is available to solve a crime.
Dan Heinrich will go to jail for child pornography, not for assaulting Jared Scheierl and not for killing Jacob Wetterling. Seems ridiculous and unjust. With DNA now available, there should be no time limit.
Saw a news report on all of the attempted abductions in Paynesville during that period of time.
Paynesville authorities blew it, big time.

I have followed the story and remember that there was a rumor that Jacob was alive and had been put in the hands of a pedophile ring. I prayed it wasn’t true but hoped his family would see him again.
I am glad they have closure but I am heartbroken at their pain.
The perp is on a federal charge. So no parole. He’ll do the max and be lucky to be alive at the end of that much hard time.
My family’s was camping in the area at the time, I was the same age as Jacob then. I remember being creeped out about the timing and proximity, especially since we were in town when it happened.
This monster should be hung for murder.
So sad for this child and the family. If true, at least he didn’t torture the boy for days or weeks before killing him. Sick bastard, there has to be other victims.

I am hoping for a quick, but painful death. Slip a sharp object between his ribs, getting his heart, liver, or kidneys. Any major organ and have him bleed out.
He’ll do life in solitary. He’ll take the cowards way out.
If they stuck him in general population, he wouldn’t last a week.
