The Pentagons top weapons buyer has ordered an independent review of the $12.9 billion Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, citing a list of actual and potential deficiencies with the costliest warship ever.

In real life, Colonel Burton came to DDT&E where I worked, when the SecAF staff tired of his involvement with the F-16 development program. He was an acolyte of the late John Boyd, whom he referred to as “The Ayatola.”
Since we already had a USAF Colonel, Jim was assigned to the Army’s Bradley program, where he lit immediately on the internal storage of weapons which were highly vulnerable to small arms fire and shrapnel, and detonated energetically, often killing all inside. Taking on the Army leaders, he used a combination of logic and embarrassment to get them to conduct some of the first extensive live fire T&E, becoming (in my eyes) the father of LFT&E. At the DoD level.
When he was pressured out of the AF he retreated to his family home in Loudon County and entered civilian local politics.
