I believe there were a series of robberies and attacks on Olympic athletes and attendees as well as the shooting you mentioned. At first there was a little half-hearted press coverage of the incidents...then came Lochte.

Lochte was Brazil’s chance to distract people from the green pool water, raw sewage bay, and crime ridden environs. Of course the media was happy to collude. What’s amazing is how many conservatives are furthering Brazil’s PR narrative. Eye-opening to witness.

There was even the kayaker who hit a submerged couch on the course and overturned. Lots of embarrassments to get off the front pages with a global distraction.
