Portuguese and Spanish sound a lot alike, at least from my perspective. A lot of we Americans are not aware that Brazil is a Portuguese speaking nation, and probably assume it's Spanish until we are informed otherwise.
Blame a terrible education in history and geography as well as a lack of mapping knowledge.
