A friend of mine pointed out to me that we owe the irrational expense and pageantry of the modern Olympics to Adolf Hitler.

Prior to the 1936 Olympics, the whole thing was a much more subdued affair, but since the Nazis put on such a glorious and magnificent show, everyone since felt it was necessary to keep up the pomposity that Hitler had established in 1936.

I didn't know that until a couple of days ago.

This is insanity, countries in debt with no money pouring it borrowed money into these things. It is obscene.

I believe there were a series of robberies and attacks on Olympic athletes and attendees as well as the shooting you mentioned. At first there was a little half-hearted press coverage of the incidents...then came Lochte.

Lochte was Brazil’s chance to distract people from the green pool water, raw sewage bay, and crime ridden environs. Of course the media was happy to collude. What’s amazing is how many conservatives are furthering Brazil’s PR narrative. Eye-opening to witness.

There was even the kayaker who hit a submerged couch on the course and overturned. Lots of embarrassments to get off the front pages with a global distraction.

I remember that, now that you mention it. Then there was the yachtswoman who got very ill from the polluted bay water, and the dressage horse that sickened from a bug bite. Not to mention that the pools didn’t merely turn green; they smelled like farts.

Anyone can see why Brazil made an international issue out of such a minor incident on Lochte’s part. The mystery is why so many conservatives joined in.
