Were you armed on that hike in Banff? I have been on several bear hunts, black bear and grizzly, in Canada and I would never venture into that country unless I was armed. I have seen bears up close and personal. Bear spray would not be enough for me!

No we were not armed so we’d have just been dinner! He heard me shout so he stood up and sniffed in all directions but was hungry for berries, dessert, haa! Guess his eye sight was dim but when he was sniffing in our direction it was scary!

Even when firearms were not permitted in National Parks, in Alaska even the rangers considered hikers carrying firearms to be prudent. I’ve heard that the firearm prohibition was not really enforced, especially in bear country.
