It has been done before. Earl Long of Louisiana is a prime example. Long was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1960, but died before taking office. Talk about colorful politicians, Earl was a good ol’ boy up there with the best of them.

Herself, on the other hand, has the sepia shading of a faded photograph.

Mel Carnahan of Missouri died before the election, but Democrats fought to keep him on the ballot, and the governor said that if the dead Carnahan won he'd appoint his wife Jean Carnahan.

In a lawful world, Carnahan should have been disqualified from the ballot and all votes for him nullified, but the state allowed a vote for the governor to choose vs. John Ashcroft.

"Carnahan" won.

Reminds me of President William Henry Harrison. He was elected to the presidency, but his inaugural address, in the rain, took two hours as he was long winded. One month later he was dead from pneumonia. Shortest administration in our history.
