Previously, from about 1580 to 1800, more than 1,000,000 European were taken as religious slaves based on Islam.

It has been called the Atlantic Jihad. The Muslims relied on deception. It was actually very bloody, and went all the way out to west of Iceland and further north than Ireland. They attacked and killed many. Many families lost their wives and children. Some Europeans were burned alive. While there were significant wars within Europe during this timeframe, Europe experienced much violence at the hands of the Muslims.

Actually, their were 4 Muslim Barbary states (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Tripoli), and the Barbars declared war on the US in 1783. The first US ship outright taken by the Barbars happened in 1881.

During the US Barbary Wars, US Naval and Marine losses included 35 killed, and 64 wounded. Of course we only went to war because we were losing significant numbers of sailors and even American families (including women and children), and significant cargo. This had been happening for centuries to the Europeans.
