Puzzled and upset.
Thats how some women working in the Islamic fashion industry view the furor in France over burkinis, the body-concealing swimsuit that has been banned in a growing number of seaside towns.
I am quite upset to say the least. Wearing a burkini is not a political statement, rather a choice of dress, said Rabia Zargarpur, a Dubai-based designer who markets her Rabia Z label of so-called modest fashions online. For Muslim women, burkinis are a symbol of liberation, not repression. Muslim women who were uncomfortable or unable to swim in mixed pools or beaches are now taking part in those activities. And women can wear a wetsuit with a hood for multiple reasons including preserving modesty or sun protection.

At a beach, I wear a surf shirt with a modest suit bottom. Sun protection and middle aged thighs. Out of the water I add a broad brimmed hat, and sometimes a cover up and a long sleeved shirt. Ive seen Amish and Charedi Jewish women splashing in long black skirts. If a Muslim woman wants to do the same, so what?
Frances problem is not the clothing, it’s the numbers.
No face covering. Ever. Unless you’re a burn victim
There too, be assured.
They might describe hidden explosives as a problem too.
Good point. OTOH you could put a lot of explosives in a cooler, boogie board, chair, stroller, or umbrella. At the Jersey shore people wheel in giant carts.
It’s the same thing if “opposite” means “same thing”.
Does not compute.
A picture says a thousand words. (Don’t know how to get pictures here without giving proper credit)

Yep that will work.
I love the Jersey shore! I began going before I could walk. :-)
If we ever had terrorism there, I would expect similar changes to protect people.
LOL LOL LOL! Don’t forget Donna Koran.
Bullcrap. France has a massive problem, far beyond ours. They have to stomp out islam as a force in society. They also closed hundreds of mosques already.
No, I do not think Islamic freedom should be protected. We didn’t protect Nazi freedom in America during WWII, and moslem freedom should be exactly the same.
I got it from ur previous post. I understand u support France’s decision. I would not support a similar US policy. Take care.
By the same thing I meant the principle is the same - not that sunbathing in the raw is the same as wearing a so-called burkini. It clearly isn’t.
Too many clothes, not enough clothing, beach pass requirements (or free), volleyball prohibited, volleyball allowed, whatever the standard - if the community wants things a certain way it generally is their prerogative.
And when dissenters object, the response is usually ‘tough beans’.
Yeah, you’re right. There seems to be no modesty anymore.
Bad as that is, it’s worse when you’re with young kids and you really have no choice but to either expose them to it or pick up and go elsewhere.
The wife doesn’t appreciate it either.
No, you are not alone. I can't quite understand what the problem is, either. In fact, women in America used to dress in beach outfits which covered much like it just a hundred or so years ago. Yes, I know we have long since moved beyond such restrictive outfits, but I'm not so sure what one sees at the beach these days is a great deal of an improvement as it goes to the opposite extreme.
It really ought be a matter of individual choice but at ground the controversy derives from a given society's perception of the female form, a lovely thing indeed, and how it ought be draped.
Thanks,
HLB
“Ok then. Any other freedoms you would like to see curtailed? Maybe we can prohibit women from driving since they may be steering a car packed with explosive substances.”
Burkinis take away a woman’s humanity, just as burqas do. Islam regards women as garbage, so women are required to dress as garbage.
The only way I would tolerate burkinis is if muslim men were required to wear one. After all, if they’re so great then why don’t men wear them?
“Ill be a minority of one here. Theres nothing wrong with a woman wearing a burkini. Its a fashion choice, and actually for beach activities a better one than many extreme bikinis that dont cover much.”
What about male modesty? Do you have a problem with men going shirtless at the beach? If not, why? Why are people so obsessed with female modesty but not male modesty?
Personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in those hot, ugly, dehumanizing garbage bags. Why go to the beach if you want to cover every inch of your body?
I know what they look like & I know real French women aren’t required to wear one. That’s not the point.
They should be banned because the Muslims have every intention of imposing sharia law & forcing it on all women, Muslim & Non-Muslim. The burkini (garbage bag) is a symbol of Muslim militancy & oppression of women. And, make no mistake, they intend to force that on EVERY woman.
They’ll never force me into a garbage bag. Which is exactly what burqas & burkinis are. As a woman, it is horribly offensive to see women wearing those cruelly hot, degrading bags while the men are wearing only trunks & shirtless. That is cruelty to women & incredibly degrading.
