“My name is Tou and my pronouns are he and him. What about you?”

I teach evening English as a Second Language classes for a community college. Last evening we had our yearly in-service meeting. The person from the college who handles all the gender stuff gave a presentation, and she recommended we do the "I am _____ and my pronouns are..." as a way of welcoming those who are not traditionally-gendered. Mind you -- this is an ESL class and most likely none of the students would get what I meant. They would also probably abandon the study of English altogether if I ever introduced the new "pronouns." English presents its own set of natural challenges without adding those. She also said to avoid calling roll the first week when taking attendance because we might have students who no longer "identify" with the name on the list. So if I have a Jose on the list and Jose now identifies as Maria, I might wind up "outing" Jose and create an uncomfortable situation for Jose if I called Jose's name. (Notice how I have avoided the use of all pronouns here.) In all my years of teaching, I have had hundreds of students and never once have I run into this situation.

You did call yourself “I”.

What self-identifying pronoun can substitute for “I”, if “I” do not identify as myself???

... lots of /s ...

This pronoun scheme cannot work and get anything else done. I suspect it will be selectively used to purge ‘racist haters’, etc.. Then back to business, oops make that entertainment.

Keep in back pocket to pull out as needed.
