It is mostly used for social interaction between people that know each other, unlike this great Free Republic site of ours.
That being said, I’ve read recently (right here in fact) that FB can request proof of ID and close your account if you don’t provide it.
That’s mostly what it’s used for yes. But you can also create an anonymous account and use it for media aggregation.
