From my comment you extrapolate that I was suggesting slavery should of continued . On the contrary , Slavery should NEVER have been a factor in early American society in the first place , but it was . As it had been in the entire of human history and right up until this very day ; in many Muslim and African countries .
Had the Republicans and Mr. Lincoln taken a less pushy confrontational approach , I believe that the northern and southern states would have soon come to an agreement on ways to mitigate and do away with the practice of slavery without throwing the entire young nation into a terrible bloody war against one another . Over 620,000 soldiers died .Mostly white and mostly rural . Countless other , mainly southern white civilians died . The South was defeated an ravaged , for years . It has only recently really come back . Was a war to end slavery , at the point of bayonet and bullet really worth that approach and result ? Oddly , after the war , many ( repeat : many) Southern blacks chose to remain exactly where they had been living and to continue , as free men and women , to farm and harvest cotton . Many others migrated north . To places like Detroit . Not being a lettered historian I can only state in the broadest of generalities . My basic premise though is that the war Between the States was a vast unnecessary waste and the out come of freedom for all could have been arrived at by other means . Our society feels the poor results even to this day . Many blacks still feel like white folks owe them something . 620,000 dead was enough . Many white are tired of hearing the constant bellyaching , feeling they have paid enough already . All the while NO ONE is complaining about the MOSLEM SLAVERS that got the whole process started and kept it going for centuries . Nor is anything made of the YANKEE sailors/merchantmen that perform all the transport of slaves . Anyway ...not saying that slavery should not have ended . Just saying it’s a shame that the South was defeated militarily . I will NEVER change that view .
