when did this conversation with Powell supposedly take place?
The domain name for the mail server was registered on Jan 13, 2009, about a month after Obama nominated her for SOS.
So she basically planned the mail server immediately so she could control the email.

True. Planned and implemented before the conversation with Powell.

And they did have a conversation, although it wasn't exactly as Hillary remembered. Very rarely is one's memory of an event the same as the actual event.

Now... Here is what likely happened.

Powell brought up the subject of Hillary's private server. He told her she should use a private email account like he did. He thought that building your own server might be crossing the line and illegal and risky. She told him she already had expert advice and didn't need his advice. (what she actually said would violate the no profanity rules here on FR). He dropped the conversation.

Appears this conversation, which Powell cannot recall, happened after she has decided to continue use of her private email.
