I don't think replaying the "regret" line hurts him.
If we had basic honesty in the press, the 2nd amendment, Khan, Curiel, and other manufactured issues wouldn't have hurt him either. The press read in the most negative connotation it can, plausibility is not a factor, and they run with it.
I don't know what the manufactured issue will be for this speech, and I so don't care that I'm watching a lame old Lee Marvin movie instead of CNN. I speculated they would try to paint the remarks as "not genuine," but that is hard to spin - people will come down on one side or the other of that, without help from the press.
My other speculation was that if it proves dicey to manufacture an issue out of this speech, the press will just ignore it and cover something else. And blame Trump for being boring.
